Processed People?
In thinking tonight about the entire "skinny" nation I got to reflecting on the entire processed market. It's interesting that we're now starting to see commercials actually promoting the use of corn syrup as that will some how help the corn farmers. Most of the corn produced is not edible by people, it's being raised to create more eco friendly gas (a seriously questionable answer to the gas issue). So, why the hype then about corn syrup?
Have you actually ever seen corn syrup by itself? It's the stuff our grandmothers used once a year to make popcorn balls. It's a thick syrup that sticks to everything and feels almost like "slime" in your hands. (Yes, I've made my share of homemade popcorn balls). Yes, I agree in moderation it's harmless. When we were kids the only time we had this product was in homemade popcorn balls. Very rarely did we find it making its way into everything we eat.
Today? Today it's a different story. It's in almost everything we eat and that food at times is marketed as healthy. Just recently I was reading the ingredients in a popular cereal marketed for its less then 100 calaories per serving and all whole grains. The ingredients at the top-corn syrup. My question was why? I started looking at other foods I had in the house and sure enough a great many of them that were marketed as healthy had this product in it.
This product has some well known "bad side effects" that it seems media and others are now trying to convince us are healthy. It tricks our brain into thinking we like it for starters. It is empty calories so it makes our body think it is still hungry, and it is addictive. The more we consume the more we feel we need because we are not getting the nutrients we need. It makes us fat, literally in an unhealthy way.
So, have we ever stopped to think why we're suddenly seeing a push for us to consume more of this product? Have we given thought to why this product is in almost all of the food we consume as a nation?
What better way to control a people then create a slow brained society. Yes, this product actually will eventually cause issues with the function of your brain. People who go on completely organic diets and leave processed foods report having a sudden clarity of thought. Children stop having ADD/ADHD problems. Have we thought of this? The response to ADD is to drug the child/adult with drugs that create mindless drones who conform. Is this what we want as a species? Perhaps some do, but I certainly don't.
It is something to contemplate. Yes, we want to be healthy and hearty with enough fat to last through the winters or hard times but we need to do that on natural foods that we once ate and thrived on. The days of hunter-gatherer needs to come back. Perhaps if more organically based fast-food restaurants appeared on the scene we could take back the minds of America.
